Kitchenomics Privacy Policy
Kitchenomics is an app published by Gremlin Garage ("we", "us"), available on Google Play and as a web app at gremlingarage.dev/apps/kitchenomics/app/. This policy explains what information is handled when you use it.
The short version
Your kitchen, shopping list, recipes and prices are stored on your device, and in your own Google Drive if you sign in. If you share with a household, we hold a shared copy until the household is closed. There are no ads, no analytics and no tracking.
Information stored on your device
The food you add (names, amounts, where it's kept, use-by dates), your shopping list, meal plan, your own recipes, prices you enter and the shops you name, and your settings (such as foods you don't eat) are saved in the app's storage on your device.
Camera and barcodes
If you scan a barcode, the camera is used only while the scanner is open, and the image is processed on your device. Images are never saved or sent anywhere. Only the barcode number is used.
Product lookups (Open Food Facts)
To name a scanned product, the app sends the barcode number to Open Food Facts, a free, open food database run by a non-profit. Only the barcode number is sent, with nothing that identifies you. Their handling of requests is covered by their privacy policy.
Google sign-in and Google Drive (optional)
If you sign in with Google, Kitchenomics asks for your name and email address (shown in Settings) and for access to its own hidden app folder in your Google Drive (the drive.appdata permission). It uses that folder to back up your data. Kitchenomics cannot see any of your other Drive files. This data goes directly between your device and Google and never passes through our servers.
Kitchenomics' use and transfer of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Disconnect any time in Settings, or at myaccount.google.com/permissions.
Shared households (optional)
If you start or join a household, our server (Cloudflare, operated for Gremlin Garage) stores a shared copy of the household's kitchen, shopping list, meal plan, prices and recipes, along with the first name you've set, so others can see who added what. Your settings, Google account and email are not shared. Anyone with the household's invite code can join, so only give it to people you live with. When the person who started the household closes it, the shared copy is deleted straight away. Records deleted inside a household are removed from our server within about 60 days.
To prevent abuse, our server briefly keeps a one-way hash of the IP address making some requests, for rate limiting, and deletes it within an hour.
Notifications
Use-it-up reminders are scheduled on your device.
Advertising, analytics and tracking
Kitchenomics has no advertising. It does not include analytics or crash-reporting tools, and it does not track you across apps or websites.
In-app purchases
Kitchenomics Pro is an optional one-off purchase processed entirely by Google Play. We never receive your payment details.
Children
Kitchenomics is a general-audience app and is not directed at children under 13.
Data retention and deletion
Data on your device stays until you delete it (Settings › Delete everything), clear the app's data or uninstall. Google Drive data is deleted by Delete everything while signed in, or in Google Drive › Settings › Manage apps. Household data is deleted when the household is closed. If you've left a household and want your past entries removed, email us with the household code.
Your rights
Depending on where you live (including the UK and EU), you may have rights to access, correct or delete personal data. Email us and we'll help. In the UK you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
Changes
If this policy changes, the updated version will be posted here with a new effective date, and the Google Play data safety information will be updated to match.
